When life throws us lemons………we head to Asheville NC

As we all know, there are times in life, where things don’t go exactly as planned.   Sooner into the trip than we anticipated, we ran into a snag and had to redirect our trip for the time being.  If you have followed our blog, you know that we ran into unseasonably cold weather in Florida.  With that being said, Jeff came down with a pretty serious sinus infection.  After several trips to different doctors, the conclusion was the heater didn’t provide the best climate for his condition, so we had no choice but to abandon the trailer for a time to get somewhere where he could spend time in recovery mode. Sometimes when life hands you lemons, you have to make lemonade.   We are currently making our lemonade in Asheville NC and life is sweet.

So here we are in Asheville, and I must say, we made a good choice.  The weather has been outstanding. We have enjoyed temps in the 60’s-70’s and at times in the 80’s. We were fortunate enough to rent a nice furnished home within walking distance of downtown.  After spending the last few weeks here, we have fallen in love with the city and the area.  There are many things to love about Asheville.  It’s got a funky liberal vibe, it’s very dog friendly,  it has the most brew pubs per capita in the United States, the people are friendly, it’s got an incredible art scene,  there is live music available at several venues nightly, but what really drew us in, is the beauty of the area  We have done our fair share of hiking in the Pisgah National Forest,  DuPont National Forest, The Blue Ridge Parkway trail system, Powhatan Forest  and the trails surrounding the downtown area.  Asheville is 2200 feet above sea level and the mountains are gorgeous.  Everywhere we turn we are surrounded and in awe by it’s beauty.
Ola has done her share swimming, and has decided that we made a good move when we chose to come to Asheville.

Although, we didn’t catch Mardi Gras in New Orleans, we did happen to catch it in Asheville.

We love the music scene in Asheville!

We will be continuing our trip within the next few weeks and will continue to head south to Texas.  We will be sad to leave Asheville, but we are excited to get back on the road, enjoying our life in Valhalla.

Hope winter has been good to all of you and hoping that Spring is on its way to you.

Erin and Jeff…….and Ola

  1. Hi, Erin and Jeff. Asheville looks really great. I was a little worried you were there to stay, until I reached the end and found you are back on track with your Valhalla trek. So, Jeff, it seems as if both of you will be back in Ann Arbor as intended, and you, Jeff, will be back in our CFL gym class. I’m relieved!

Honestly, though, I think if I had your vigor and had wound up in Asheville as you had, I very well might stay there and forget old Ann Arbor!

Well, that’s all for now. Say hello to Ola for me.

    /Don

P.S. – The gal up in the “Cc:” line is my wife. Jeff, you met her briefly once or twice.

  2. Love Asheville! We drove through there this fall. Had dinner at a Korean restaurant on the main drag and it was soooo good. Yes, lots of great hiking and sounds like you lucked out with the weather. Glad Jeff is on the mend and that Plan B has been a happy accident. Miss you guys, big hugs to you and especially sweet Ola 🙂

    1. Hey Celine, Good to hear from you. Yes, we love Asheville too! It’s been great spending extended time here and really getting to know the city and the area. The food here has been fantastic, everywhere we go, we have had great food. We will be departing next week and will be sad to leave the area.
Hope you guys are staying out of the storms that are rolling up the east coast.
      Miss you guys too!

  3. Jeff – Hope you’re on the mend quickly. I had something very similar last Feb. while here in Georgia and it was no fun! After a glorious Feb. on Jekyll Is. we head back to A2 this weekend…in time, I’m sure, for a March snow storm!

    1. Hi Owen & Jane

Thanks for the note. Yeah the cold weather got the best of me, and it was really hard to turn around! With that said Asheville has been a great stop for us and we really lucked out on the weather. Im glad to hear that you had good weather what a difference that makes.

Im almost back to 100% and ready to get back on the road in a couple of weeks. Next stop San Antonio by way of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana so it should be an interesting drive. All is good we still only drive 4 or 5 hours a day at the most.

Most everyone that i have spoke with in Ann Arbor has said that winter can go away at any time so we’ll keep our fingers crossed for you.

  5. There’s really been some wicked colds and flu going around. Sorry to hear that Jeff got one – and I’m glad he’s getting such good care and having a good time, too! It all looks so pretty (especially Ola). We’re headed to Nashville in a week or so. Detour for more music!

    1. Renee,
Glad to hear you are traveling to Nashville. I assume you have been before, it’s a great town for music.
Below is a link to a place we went that we really liked. It’s a singer-songwriters venue. The artist perform their music and converse about their careers in a intimate venue setting. We had a great time.
It’s inexpensive and only about 4-6 blocks from Broadway. I think you guys would really like it if you have a chance. We didn’t have reservations and had to wait until most people were seated before we got in. I would make reservations if you think you might go.
